Solo travel. It’s big. It’s scary. But is it, really? We’re led to believe that traveling solo is a risky and dangerous pursuit, but really it’s one of the most rewarding experiences you can participate in. Discover the 7 reasons why traveling solo should be right at the top of your “to-do” list.
Three years ago, I boarded a plane all on my lonesome and headed for parts relatively unknown. I’m not going to lie. I was terrified. A woman alone in a foreign country? It just sounds like the start of cheesy horror film.
But little did I know what a rich and rewarding experience I was about to undertake.
Not only was I about to experience the world in a whole new way, but I was about to discover things about myself that I had never known. Soon, I would find a courage, a determination and a free-spiritedness that I never knew existed. I would be transformed both internally and externally. In short, my solo trip was going to change my life.
So how can solo travel change your life?
1. There’s Nothing Better Than Leaving Your Comfort Zone
It was Mark Twain that is credited with once saying:
“Why not go out on a limb? That’s where the fruit is.”
I like to think that this applies especially to life and traveling solo.
It’s not a comfortable thing to set out on new horizons. We are trained to listen to our fear and to fear those things which we don’t know intimately. We are taught to always play it safe and “stick to what we know”. But just like tasty fruit, sometimes we have to go out on a limb to find the juiciest and richest of life’s experiences.
Getting out of your comfort zone will allow you to not only explore new external horizons, but internal ones as well. You never know, you just might discover something you never knew you had at all. Don’t be surprised to find that you’re even more confident and capable than you thought you were.
2. There’s A Great Big World Out There
Our planet is huge, and that means that it has almost endless experiences to offer. When you travel solo, you are giving yourself the chance to experience these beautiful things without the drawback of a differing opinion.
Not only will going solo give you an unimpeded view of the world, but it will allow you to deeply explore all the absolutely jaw-dropping aspects that our planet has to offer. What more could you ask for? The opportunities are endless!
3. Get To Know YOU
Traveling alone really gives you the chance to get to know yourself. Look forward to spending hours of time in your own company, of enjoying yourself in a totally limitless and honest way. The best relationship you can ever build is the relationship with yourself, and nothing will do that like time alone, abroad, with your thoughts.
4. Your Views Will Change
Is it any surprise that experiencing the world will change your views? It’s easy to get caught up in our own small lives in our own small corner of the world, but traveling allows you to step outside of yourself and what you know. It allows you to experience things you never even thought of, see lives lived as you never thought lives could be lived.
There is no better way to discover the truth of life than solo travel.
5. Discover Your Inner Strength
There is nothing for revealing strength you never knew you had than traveling alone.
Now, I’m not trying to say that something terrible will happen on your trips abroad, and you will have to tap into some inner strength to overcome those obstacles. No, no, no. Not at all. What I am saying is that traveling alone is a move that inherently requires strength and courage.
Most people will never travel abroad, let alone do it solo. Just taking the leap to book that single ticket is a huge step and one that requires all the bravery you can muster. The rest of the trip is no different. Each day you will be faced with unknown. That is inherently scary. Doing solo? That’s just downright ballsy.
6. You’ll Make Friends Abroad
Okay. You want the truth? There’s really no such thing as solo traveling. That’s because when you travel alone, you are guaranteed to make friends (well, unless you’re a bit…shall we say off?) You’re going to meet a thousand different people on your travels, each one more different than the last. They’ll probably even range from all over the globe as well. So look forward to expanding your mind and your Facebook friend list.
7. Experiences > Things
Sure, we all like things like souvenirs, but traveling alone gives you so much more than that.
Solo travel gives you the freedom to really experience life, and that’s really what it’s all about. Experiences are always more valuable than things, and from them we can glisten little tidbits that open our eyes and expand our consciousness.
Why buy a pair of shoes when you can learn about a new culture? Why worry about that branded sweatshirt when there’s a castle full of history to explore? Life is all about living — and there’s no living like exploring the world around you all on your own.
So what are you waiting for? Don’t you think it’s time to book that ticket and get that bag packed? After all…you might regret it if you don’t!
