Country Comfort, Country Style: The Leicester Arms Hotel (Review)

Late last year, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to stay and dine at the picturesque Leicester Arms Hotel located in Penshurst, Kent.

Arrival & Dinner

If you’re looking for a quaint and comfortable country hotel, then I could not recommend a better place than this. From the moment we arrived, until the moment that we left, we were absolutely bowled over by not only the beauty and cleanliness of the historic hotel, but the absolute quality of everything as well.

For dinner we were given an incredible menu to choose from – all of which was sourced locally – and got to enjoy some of the tastiest food we’ve ever eaten while in the UK. It was really no wonder, though, as the inn boasts a Michelin recommended restaurant.

I enjoyed a lovely venison burger (again, locally sourced), while my partner enjoyed the ever-classic fish and chips. It’s also important to note that I enjoyed one of the finest pints of Guinness I have yet enjoyed outside of Ireland.

The portion sizes were generous, yet not overwhelming, and the price was just as good. The rustic dinning room was just as stunning as the rest of the property, and overlooked a lovely garden and vibrant green field, which really leant to the provincial experience.

The Stay

The staff was not only friendly and attentive, but genuinely lovely and willing to answer any questions and fill us in all the things to see and do in the village and surrounding area.

Our room was likewise a treat. Located on the top floor, not only was the room well-appointed in a comfy, warm and modern decor, but the bed was one of the largest and comfiest we have ever yet enjoyed. This room also benefitted from a similar view as the dining room, with a window that looked out over their delightful gardens and the surrounding fields.

In the morning, we enjoyed a large and hearty full-english breakfast (which included sustainably sourced selection of teas and coffees) that even came with bread that was made locally as well. Again, the staff was friendly and attentive, and even took their time discussing the charm of the local area with us, as well as some of the history of the area.

It’s important to point out that Penshurst and surrounding areas like Edenbridge, are major sources of history and boast former locals such as Sir Phillip Sidney (whose former home can be found directly across the street from the Leicester Arms) and Anne Boleyn, who all hailed from this beautiful area of Kent.

So if you’re looking for a lovely, friendly, warm and welcoming country stay, we highly recommend the Leicester Arms. From the warm staff to the beautiful and comfy rooms, we promise you won’t be disappointed.
