Well hey there, strangers! It’s been a long time, but I am back and ready to help get you motivated for the new year.
It’s been a crazy year for me, full of all kinds of ups, downs and in-betweens. To say this year was a rollercoaster would be an understatement, and I’m sure the story was the same for many of you out there. Not only did I start my own business, but I started college (again) and also dug my toes into the commercial publishing realm. As if that wasn’t enough, I also moved into a new house on the other side of town and even made a furry edition to the family (check out @KingKodiCat on Instagram.)
Thankfully, I’ve survived it all and 2018 is coming to close. But now I realize that, rather than rest, it’s time to get myself motivated for the upcoming year. I’m usually one of those who just watches the new year sail in with a mildly interested eye. No more! I’m determined to make 2019 a good one — and I’m sure you are too.
The first place I went looking for motivation was…you guessed it…the internet. I was not let down. In my hunt for things to get me excited for 2019 I came across this brilliant checklist from Jessica Bippen, MS, RD.
This checklist is called the “Best Self Checklist” and it’s a sure fire way to ring in 2019 on just the right note. By doing some self-checks, setting some goals and really digging in from day one, find out how you too can have your best year yet with your “best self”.
Try Something New
According to Bippen, trying something new is a great way to keep yourself motivated. Especially good is choosing a new exercise routine as it will keep you interested and ready for more. Try that new hot yoga class everyone is talking about or maybe sign up for that pilates class you’ve always liked the look of. The new year is the perfect time to try a new activity and mix it up!
Phone A Friend
Friends are great for keeping us motivated and accountable, according to Bippen. Whether it’s just for a weekly (or daily) check-in or a full on workout accountability buddy, give your bestie a call and get them involved in your new mix of activities. It will strengthen your friendship and also keep you motivated through a healthy bit of accountability and competition.
Set A Goal
Face it, we all have a list of New Year’s Resolutions that is just sitting, languishing away in some forgotten journal somewhere. Not this year! Be your best self by setting a goal and sticking to it! Remember: use the smart method. Make sure that all of your goals are: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Reasonable (Realistic), and TIMELY. Get creative with your goals, don’t just focus on the weight on the scale. Light that laser focus up and don’t let anyone stop you. If you feel your goal slipping, get your accountability buddy involved!
Bippen’s best self checklist makes it clear — we need to reward ourselves, and not just with some rinky-dink candy bar either. Reward yourself for your progress, no matter how small. Achieving a goal takes time and we deserve to be rewarded for the progress we make in-between our starting place and our end destination. Get as creative with your rewards as you do with your goals. Been dying to try that eyeliner from Courtney Act? Had your eye on that stellar new nail polish? Get it! Treat yo’self!
Take a Rest
You didn’t think this would be a part of this list, did you? Yes. Keeping to our goals and staying motivated in the new year is important, but it’s also important to make sure you get the rest that you need to be your best self. According to Bippen, taking a day or two off when you’ve been going hard is a great way to rejuvenate and amp up your motivation. It’s also important to remember the power of “no” and remember that sometimes, you just need to take care of you.
