Let’s face it, we all want to be more successful. Whether your goal is to climb to the top of your Fortune 500 company or just finish that painting — being good at what we do is important. Discover the 13 easy tips that can have you living a more successful life.
Every person’s definition of success is different, but it ultimately comes down to one thing: happiness. It doesn’t if that happiness means having a loving partner, a big house or a nice car. We each define a successful life as something different and that’s okay!
But success always seems like such an abstract and out-of-reach thing. Well not anymore! Using and carefully cultivating these 13 tips will have you living your most successful like in no time. No matter what success means to you.
1. Think Big:
The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.
It’s easy to get down on ourselves and think our dreams are too big. But let me tell you a little secret: there’s no such thing as dreaming too big.
Give yourself the freedom to dream as big as you possibly can. Some of the most successful people in the world have striven for the stars…and reached them. You can too, but only if you have faith and confidence in your ability and dreams. Don’t let anyone persuade you from what your heart wants most. Think as big as possible and go for it with everything you have.
What’s the worst that can happen? You don’t reach the stars and settle for the moon instead? Doesn’t sound too bad to me…
2. Find What You Love…
You know you are on the road to success if you would do your job and not be paid for it.
– Oprah Winfrey
It’s hard to be successful at something you hate. It’s 10x easier to be successful at something you’re passionate about. Find that thing that you love most in the world, that thing that calls to your soul, and do it. It doesn’t matter what it is. It could be knitting wool monkeys, painting, writing, making spreadsheets. Find that thing that calls out to your soul and completely transports you. You’ll never see success come easier.
After all, life’s too short to pour our entire being into things we hate. Things that just take our lives away from us.
3. It’s All About Balance
There is an immutable conflict at work in life and in business, a constant battle between peace and chaos. Neither can be mastered, but both can be influenced. How you go about that is the key to success.
– Phil Knight
Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed and sucked in by all the big chaotic things. Find a way to balance your life and your work. We can’t have one without the other, after all. Make time for the hard work AND the play. There are enough hours in the day if you want them bad enough.
4. Be Okay With Failing
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.
– Henry Ford
Everyone fails. Everyone. So, if you think you won’t…guess again.
We’re human and that means we aren’t perfect. No matter what your road to success is, you’re going to make some missteps and miscalculations. Let them go now before they even begin. Instead, change your way of thinking about failure. Don’t see it as a screw up. See it as an opportunity to learn and make yourself wiser and more of a player. There’s a silver lining to everything if you just have the courage to look for it!
5. Decide to Succeed
I made a resolve then that I was going to amount to something if I could. And no hours, nor amount of labor, nor amount of money would deter me from giving the best that there was in me. And I have done that ever since, and I win by it.
– Colonel Sanders
Remember when your mom or dad used to say, “You’re only stopping yourself…”? This is the same thing.
If you don’t resolve…really, really resolve…inside your head to be a success, you won’t be. You have to convince yourself before you can convince anyone else, so decide to be successful. Once you’ve made the resolution to be a success no matter what, you will be. There’s no one that can stop the power of a resolved mind.
6. Action Jackson
It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.
– Leonardo da Vinci
This one is pretty common sense.
If you want to be successful, you have to be proactive. Don’t just sit and wait for success to come to you. It doesn’t work that way. Go out and take the things you want, do the things you want to do and do it the way you imagine it in your mind.
No one is going to hand success to you (unless you live a very charmed life), so you have to take it for yourself. Once you have a clear vision of what you want from your success, get up and go after it with everything you have. You can rest on your laurels once you’ve achieved it.
7. Avoid Conflict
The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people.
– Teddy Roosevelt
When I say you have to fight for what you want, I don’t mean with people.
It’s very true that a part of being successful is being able to stand up for what you want, but it also means knowing how to get along with people. You’ll catch a lot more flies with honey than you will with vinegar, so learn how to resolve your issues and get what you need diplomatically. Avoid the conflict. It only creates roadblocks to your success in the long run.
8. Be A First Timer
A person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds.
– Mark Twain
Success and innovation go hand in hand.
Just because you’ve never seen something done a certain way before doesn’t mean there isn’t a different way to do it. Embrace your new ideas and don’t be afraid to apply them. After all, some of the greatest success stories begin with new and untested ideas…
9. Believe In Yourself
If you can dream it, you can do it.
– Walt Disney
Yeah, yeah yeah. So this one is cheesy. Cheese factor doesn’t matter here. Truth does.
If you can’t believe in yourself, how can you ever convince anyone else that you’re a success? Before you can take action on your goals you have to know, inside, that you can achieve them. Be ready for failure and be prepared to try again when it happens. Know that, no matter what happens, you can’t be turned from your goals and you will do everything you can to achieve them.
Know that, no matter what has happened in your life to this point, doesn’t matter. That’s the beautiful part of being human. There’s always a fresh start waiting and there’s always endless possibility before you. The sky is the limit…but only if you recognize that in your heart.
10. Keep on the Sunny Side
Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.
– Thomas Jefferson
It’s hard to be successful if you’re a Negative Nancy. No matter what setbacks might fall your way, how difficult things might look, keep a positive outlook. Try to find the silver lining in any situation. This will keep you energized and motivated to achieve your goals and keep you on the right track to success.
11. Embrace the Discouragement
Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed.
– Abraham Lincoln
This is just like failure. Things are going to get hard sometimes. Success is not an easy road. So accept your occasional discouragement now and prepare for it. Make a plan. How are you going to bounce back when things get hard and you’re feeling down? How are you going to keep yourself motivated and ambitious?
To err is human…to become discouraged is even more human. Get past it now so you can be successful later.
12. You Betta Work
Unless you are willing to drench yourself in your work beyond the capacity of the average man, you are just not cut out for positions at the top.
– J.C. Penny
Did I mention that success always equals hard work? Oh, I did. That must be because it’s so true.
If you’re not ready to work hard, sacrifice those nights out (or in), then you aren’t ready for success. Success is something that we have to strive for. It doesn’t just come to us like rain and clean air, it’s an uphill struggle sometimes.
Be prepared to work hard and to sacrifice time, money, relationships…all of it. Only when you’re really ready to bleed for what you want will you become successful.
13. Be Brave. Be Authentic.
Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
– Steve Jobs
We’ve all heard that little voice inside us that warns us or tells us when we’re doing something that really calls to us. Have the courage to follow that voice and where it leads you…9 times out of 10 it’s right.
