Picking the Perfect Personal Planner for You

The new year is looming closer and closer, and that means its time to get those personal transformations planned out. For many, this means getting organized and, often, getting organized starts with a personal planner. But there are literally thousands of planners out there. How can you possibly choose just one? Never fear! I’ve got you covered.

1. What Do You Need Your Planner to do For You?

This is the first and most important question to ask yourself when looking for the perfect personal planner. Is your planner strictly for work? Will it only hold important coffee appointments with the boss, or will you also need to use it for your family schedules too? Perhaps you want a planner with pretty pictures and nice daily mindfulness exercises that keep you alert, thankful and motivated? Or maybe you need something that functions as part-time schedule-keeper, part-time trapper keeper. Whatever it is, make sure you find a planner that has all the bases covered for you.

2. Size

How big do you need your planner to be? Maybe you’re looking for something small and slim, capable of keeping track of a few dates and sliding in and out of a pocket with ease. Maybe you’re looking for something a little bigger, with pockets and extra space for crafting, scrapbooking or memory ideas like this planner from Plum Paper. No matter what you need, make sure to assess your needs honestly and only invest in a planner that will fit easily in your day-to-day life. For beginning organistas, the smaller, yet more “involved” planners are the best, as they are pretty, easy to carry around and fun to write in.

3. Price

This is a base you should cover early on, as personal planners come in a variety of prices. While the high end ones often come in an array of beautiful colors, textures and colors, as well as a variety of features like stickers and removable covers, a low-end planner can still have just as great an impact on your daily routine. Make sure to set your price early, and don’t linger too long in the world of the “too expensive”. Keep your expectations realistic and find something that works for you. With that many options out there, you’re guaranteed to find something that works for you.

4. Internal Layout

This goes hand-in-hand with knowing what you need from your personal planner, but its still important to remember once your price is set and you’re ready to shop. Do you need an hour by hour plan, or do you just new a few lines to map out the general appointments of the day? How about monthly calendars, do you need them too? What about an address book? Password keeper? Bill schedules? Make sure to know what you need inside of your planner, and how you will need the spacing to work. Also be sure to secure any additional sections that you might need.

5. Look & Binding

Okay, okay. If you’re anything like me, this is one of the first things you actually look for (though it probably shouldn’t be). Almost every girl is a sucker for a pretty planner, and with all the designs out there, it’s not hard to see why. From customizable monograms to expertly designed artist rendered covers, there are thousands and thousands of gorgeous, to-die-for planners out there. Go into your personal planner hunt with an open mind, but a vision. Would you like a glitter covered planner? A floral covered one? Maybe you want kittens or forest scenes or nothing at all? What about the binding? Perhaps you want rose gold metallic coiling, or synthetic leather binding? It all depends on your lifestyle, your needs and your aesthetic.
