It’s a new year and you know what that means…a whole new you! The start of an entirely new calendar year is a clean slate, and a great way for us to start fresh in accomplishing our dreams and personal goals. No matter what you’ve got your sights set on this January, these 11 habits are sure to help keep you on the road to success.
1. Work Inside Out
It can be easy for us to immediately look at external factors when it comes to being successful. But how can we possibly hope to change the world around us if we aren’t able to change the world inside of us?
Before you can change your life and achieve your goals externally, you need to be able to affect change within yourself. Wake up. Take a long, hard look inside and be honest. Do a personal inventory and take stock of your best qualities and your most “toxic” qualities. What habits do you already possess that need to be shed to have your most successful 2017?
Forming a consciousness is the first step in any success story. Becoming conscious means becoming aware of what life really is and what it is not. Take a step outside and see where and with whom you can enact change and become successful in 2017.
“We don’t reach the mountaintop from the mountaintop. We start at the bottom and climb up. Blood is involved.”
– Cheryl Strayed, Brave Enough
2. There’s Always a Silver Lining
This is one of my favorite quotes (and one of the ones I am known for using most frequently). There’s always a silver lining.
No matter what negative thing is happening in your life, there is always a positive aspect behind it. Sometimes, those things are harder to see, or take longer, but they are always there. If you want to be more successful in 2017, make the decision to see more of the positive in life.
Turn those common toxins (greed, anger, impatience, jealousy, stupidity) into acceptance, compassion and understanding. Become a powerful motivator of yourself and those around you. If you want to be successful, see success everywhere you look.
Treat other people with respect.
Everyone has their own backstory. No matter what we think we know about someone, you never truly know what is going on “behind the scenes”. It is classy to be cordial. Have the decency to be quiet when and where it matters.
Success isn’t always about what goal-oriented things we accomplish. Sometimes, success is simply about positive growth. Learning to respect yourself and others is a great example of that.
4. Put Others First
Putting others first is another abstract one. We don’t always think of making others a priority when it comes to being “successful”. But, surprisingly, putting others first is a great way to cultivate success in your personal and professional life.
It’s hard to have an impact on the world around you when you only have focus on your own small dramas. Reach out and touch a family member or close coworker. Be mindful of them and offer to listen to them without expecting anything in return.
You’ll be surprised how quickly your own life will change by simply having a little compassion for others.
5. Be Kind
2016 was a rough year. That makes this particular habit even more important than it ever was before.
Kindness will get you further in life than any other habit, trait or behavior you could possibly cultivate. There is no quicker or faster way to touch the people around you and simply your interactions with them. How much easier is success to obtain when those around you are helping you achieve it? Kindness can do that for you.
“Strength of character means the ability to overcome resentment against others, to hide hurt feelings, and to forgive quickly.”
– Lawrence G. Lovasik, The Hidden Power of Kindness
6. Find the Good
Finding the good goes hand-in-hand with finding the silver lining.
No matter what situation you find yourself in, look for the good. When the house is a mess and the kids are running around in circles, screaming their heads off, find a moment of silence and be thankful for the good things in your life.
Being able to see the good in challenging situations allows you to take life’s knocks to the chin a bit better. Being able to go with the flow in such a way makes it easier for you to achieve your goals and overcome the inevitable set-backs that will occur with those goals.
Looking for the good can also improve your personal relationships – especially those coworker relationships that might be a bit more challenging.
7. Slow It Down
In our modern, fast-paced society, it’s easy to get sucked up into the hectic. But, if you’re aiming to be more successful in 2017, you need to learn to slow things down.
One of the most valuable gifts you can give yourself is time. When life throws us curveballs, our first instinct is to react. But, by taking a few minutes and a few steps back, we can often assess the situation more honestly and more successfully.
8. Be Present
Be present in every second, every moment of your life. When other people speak: listen. When someone asks for a moment of your time: give it wholeheartedly.
When you show up in life and are present in each moment of it, you will be inspired to truly commit and follow through. Things you used to be afraid to tackle won’t seem so daunting. Supportive relationships will essentially bloom out of nowhere. Presence is one of the keys that makes the world go round.
Don’t know how to even begin being present? Try a motivational planner and organizer like The DailyGreatness Journal, which is packed full of mindfulness exercises that will keep you engaged and present.
9. Smile a Little More
Being more successful can often be as simple as smiling more.
Smiles light up rooms and lift up our personal auras. Not only do they make us more appealing in places like the workplace, they also lift up our spirits as well.
There is a lot in your life to be grateful for. So be grateful for it! Smile and enjoy your life and all the little curveballs it has to throw at you. When you’re uplifted, attacking goals becomes a much less daunting task!
10. Be Involved
Sometimes, it’s not enough to just be present. If you want to be successful, you need to be hands on and involved in your life.
You can’t be an impact or a success by being a spectator. After all, they don’t give the trophies to the audience, do they? Only to the racers. You will never know the power you possess unless you learn the depth of it.
Activate yourself and your life. Get dirty. Dig in. Touch the lives of others in ways you never thought you could. Go after the things you never thought you would accomplish in a million years.
If you want to be successful, you have to reach out and grab life by the throat. So what are you waiting for?
“So this, I believe, is the central question upon which all creative living hinges: Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?”
– Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
11. Be Grateful
Want to be successful this year? Try being grateful first.
The people and the situations around you are inspired and transformed by an attitude of gratitude. So adopt one.
Be grateful, despite the burdens of your life or what little kinks come your way. Don’t look at situations and circumstances in your life for what they are not. Look at them for what they have the potential to be. Impact others by turning your pain or your frustrations into positive and constructive support networks and attitudes. No matter how dark things get, look ahead and find the light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s easy to start a new year saying we want to be successful, but it’s important that we know – clearly – what that success looks like. Sometimes, success isn’t always about scoring that promotion or redecorating that room. Sometimes, success can simply be having a positive impact on the people, places and things around us.
So what are you waiting for? Flex that life-muscle and get to work. Make 2017 your most positive, kind, compassionate and successful year yet!
